Chandra (moon)/சந்திரனைத் தலையிற் தரித்த கோலம்.
Chandra (moon) was much or special affair towards Rohini, among the 27 daughter of Daksha (27 stars as daughters and all of them were married to moon). Due to that reason all the other wives complained it to the father Dakasha that their husband moon is not treating them fairly. Then Daksha got angry and cursed the moon to lose its luminance (beauty or brightness ) day by day. Everyday the moon started loosing one luminance part out of his 16 parts. Afraid and ashamed moon and surrendered to lord Shiva to save him. In order to save the Chandra (moon), lord Shiva wore the moon crescent on His head at last 3 days before to loose himself and making him grow for 15 days and decay for 15 days periodically.

சந்திரன் தட்ச குமாரிகள் இருபத்து ஏழு பேரை மணந்த போதிலும், அவர்களில் ரோகிணியிடம் மட்டும் அதிகம் பிரியமாய் இருந்தான். அதனால் கோபம் கொண்ட தட்சன் சந்திரனின் அழகு குறைந்து மங்கிப் போகச் சாபம் கொடுத்ததாக புராணங்களில் காணலாம்.
தன் சாபம் நீங்க ஈசனை வழிபட்டான் சந்திரன். அவனின் கலை முழுதும் தேய ஆரம்பித்தது. இன்னும் இரண்டு நாட்களில் முற்றிலும் காணாமல் போய்விடும் என்ற நிலைமை தோன்றிய போது இறைவனே அவன் மீது இரக்கங் கொண்டு அவனைக் காப்பாற்றுகிறார். மூன்றாம் பிறையன்று தேய்ந்திருந்த சந்திரனைச் சேகரம் செய்து தன் முடியில் சூடியதால், 'சந்திரசேகரர்' என்ற பெயர் பெற்றார் ஈசன்.
சேகரன் என்பதற்குக் காப்பவன் என்ற பொருளும் வருகின்றது. முழுதுமாய்த் தேய்ந்துவிடாமல் சந்திரனைக் காத்து அருளியதாலும் இந்தப் பெயர் ஏற்பட்டது.
